Halo: Retribution

Although I am still finishing the Karen Traviss trilogy right now, I am already hyped for the next installment of Halo lore. On August 29th Troy Denning’s Halo: Retribution will release. The cover art alone is just beautiful!

Here is the official summary:

December 2553. Less than a year after the end of the Covenant War, a string of violent incidents continues to threaten the tenuous peace in human-held space, culminating in the assassination of UNSC fleet admiral Graselyn Tuwa and the abduction of her family. It is a provocation so outrageous that the Office of Naval Intelligence must retaliate swiftly and ferociously—but only after its operatives identify her killer and rescue the hostages.

This mission will be the first for homicide-detective-turned-ONI-operative Veta Lopis and her young team of Spartan-IIIs, and something feels wrong from the start. The obvious suspect is an infamous Brute who leads the Keepers of the One Freedom, an ex-Covenant splinter group in fierce opposition to the UNSC. But Lopis and her team soon realize that the truth is much more insidious than they could ever have imagined, and with Fred-104, Kelly-087, and Linda-058 of Blue Team for combat support, they must stop a plan hatched in the bowels of the secret research station Argent Moon — a plan so sinister it could destroy all those still reeling from thirty years of intergalactic conflict…

I haven’t read Last Light by Troy Denning yet, but this seems to be kind of a successor to it. At least some of the same characters will appear. Most importantly Veta Lopis. I am really looking forward to her character and story and I will definitely read Last Light before Retribution.

The story is set in pre Halo 4 times, which is a little sad, because I am dying to read more Halo 5 era stuff like the one story in Fractures. Which one was that? The one where BB and Osman land on this secretive planet? Gosh, excuse my memory. It is the worst.

Hah! I just found out. It is Rossbach’s World. I really liked that story! And I would love to see more lore from this era. But that is a tricky part for 343 I guess. I don’t think they will make the same mistake as they did with Halo 4 and the Karen Traviss trilogy. Telling the complete pre story of the game in the books and the people who haven’t read that and only played the game (like me, back then) are completely lost. I don’t think that they would do that again, so I don’t expect much or any Halo 5 sequel lore soon.

But 343 could always extend the very weak plot of Halo 5: Guardians couldn’t they? They definitely could.

Girls Love Halo Interview – Boys Edition with Sal

After all the wonderful Interviews that I have done with the ladies, I thought it might be time to open this segment to the men as well. Let them put their 2 cents in.

First up is my good friend Sal aka Forerunner Omega. We met on Instagram in 2013 over our shared interest in Halo and in particular the taking screenshots part of Halo. We have also been in 2 clans together and have had many great Halo sessions. That was mostly back in the Halo 4 days, when I still had time to stay up until the morning. Sal is a very artsy person, a graphic designer with a big nerdy collection of figures from all sorts of games or shows. Sometimes he gives them a special paint job too. He has done a lot for the community by creating logos or wallpapers for free. The IG Girls Love Halo logo for example was made by him. To me he is the original Fotus guy. He rocks this armor since forever. And he still creates beautiful screenshots which you will see throughout the Interview. So, without further ado, let the man tell you his story. Enjoy!

1. When did you start playing Halo?

My first experience to play Halo was when my friend bought Halo on the launch day. I never thought I would see anything as amazing as this. It was my first experience into any type of shooter game/genre. I only got to the part when Chief meets the flood that day. I didn’t get any type of Xbox console sadly until 2007.  So I missed out on playing online gaming for Halo 1 through 3. Halo Reach was the first game that I did any online gaming but that sadly wasn’t until 2008. ^-^.

2. If you could choose to be one character of the Halo universe, who would you be?

If Red VS Blue counts as well I would have to say Agent Washington because I always thought he was badass and his personality is like mine from what all my friends tell me.

3. Do you have a favorite Halo quote?

It probably has to be when Master Chief met the Didact for the first time in Halo 4. Just that exact line gave me goosebumps. Especially how the helmet just wrap his head.

“The forerunners… have returned… This Tomb … is now yours“– Didact (Forerunner Mission)

Girls Love Halo Interview with Maria

It has been too long since the last Girls Love Halo Interview. That is for sure. But now we are back in the game with an absolute die hard Halo fan. Maria aka The Lone Gun Girl was so kind as to answer the usual 10 questions. I have been following her for a long time now and I am always full of joy to see new items in her collection. Her carefully arranged pictures are a must see. Enjoy!

Maria Interview Fotu 2

1. When did you start playing Halo?

Even when I first played Combat Evolved in 2002 along with my cousins I never felt any interest in the franchise until 2012 when a guy that I used to date told me about its story.

I’m a Sci-Fi fan since Kinder Garden days, so it was love at first sight between Halo and me when I first read about the Halo Array, the Forerunners, the Spartans and even the Flood, lol.

I like to say that I’m a Halo fan since 2012.

2. If you could choose to be one character of the Halo universe, who would you be?

No doubt I choose Catherine Halsey.

After reading the Kilo Five Trilogy I found out I feel strongly connected to the character in ways I never experienced before with any other character from any other franchise, that’s saying a lot.

But don’t be scared I’m not going to kidnap children to turn them into soldiers, lol.

Pick of the Week – Human Cortana

The Halo 4 Cortana is in my opinion the most beautiful version. I just love her complexion. Omnine on Deviant Art gave her a human skin tone in this picture. I think she looks even more beautiful. You know when I think about it, this Halo 4 Cortana version is the best animated video game character I have seen so far. The amount of emotion and life in her face! Ahhhh, I wanna marry her.

I love Halo 4

I know many people will disagree with my statement, let alone want to bash on me for saying such a stupid thing. But to be very honest, I don’t care. I love Halo 4. And I want to share why.

Halo 4 came out in a time when I just recently had made an Xbox Live account. Before, I had played all my games on my boyfriends profile. When I realized how much I enjoyed the sound of an achievement popping up, it was time to make my own profile and stop giving them to my boyfriend. I also discovered Instagram in 2012. That meant meeting a bunch of new friends and finding a new hobby.

With Xbox Live came the possibility to play multiplayer. And boy did I use that feature with Halo 4. I spent hours playing Slayer and Swat on Halo 4. It’s almost disturbing to me now, seeing that I have next to zero time to play any game at the moment. But anyways, I loved and still love the Halo 4 multiplayer. And since nearly everybody I know hates Halo 4, I had to ask myself why it is so different to me. Everybody loves a certain Halo the most. For me it’s CE and Halo 4. When I think about both of them, I have the fondest memories. And not only about the game, but about the people I played it with, the time and circumstances I was in, while playing them. With CE it’s the memory of first contact with a shooter, my blossoming love for Master Chief and the wonderful feeling of playing the campaign in split screen with my boyfriend. I remember our little apartment, being young and careless. And later on more memories are added when Halo: CE Anniversary came out and we played it again and again. Trying certain achievements over and over, listening to weird 80’s music while running through the Library or learning to grenade jump. All these memories make it the greatest game in the world for me.

For Halo 4 I have similar feelings. When I think about Halo 4 I immediately want to play it. When I hear certain music I immediately want to play it. My boyfriend and I played countless hours of Slayer while listening to Riff Raff, Wiz Khalifa, Iron Maiden or Slayer (haha, how appropriate). We played whole evenings and nights, falling to bed at 5 am with images of recent fights on our minds. And the campaign…yes everybody hates it too. I certainly don’t like everything about it. The missions are too repetitive. (If you think about it though, this argument is invalid considering Halo CE levels like The Library or Two Betrayals. Just saying.) What I really liked about Halo 4 were the cutscenes with Chief and Cortana. Dem feels! Or the epic scene with Chief, Cortana, Lasky, Lord Hood and Roland on the bridge of Infinity? The way Chief doesn’t take shit from dear Terrence? I love it!

Yeah the campaign isn’t perfect, but I had a lot of fun playing it.

Here are 3 things I like about the Halo 4 multiplayer:

  • You see the Spartans in your game before playing. See their armor and stance. It is a fun feature and I love stuff like this.
  • I love certain maps. My all time favorite map is Complex. It is perfect for Swat. I mean really perfect. Another fantastic map is Adrift. Slayer on Adrift is the best.
  • The weapons are exactly the way I want them. The DMR is my baby. The DMR in Halo 5 is eh.

So what else makes Halo 4 so great to me? I started taking screenshots on Halo 4. I had so much fun playing around with forge, always trying to get better and discovering a new effect. Before 343 fucked around with the file share it was so easy to take screenshots and discover the ones from other screenshot artists. Then I met Lily on Instagram and we started our screenshot account. I also met Sal, another dear friend from the States. He was into screenshots too and so we would all get together every now and then and have a lot of fun posing or just killing each other. I also remember custom games with people from the Halo community. Back then it was pretty common that a big group would get together and played new game types or maps. I had the best time during such nights.

So what Halo 4 is to me, to others, it might be Halo 2,  3 or Halo Reach. They have the fondest memories of those games. They have met their online friends in that time or maybe discovered taking screenshots back then.

What I am really trying to say is, a game can be great because it has a good campaign and the multiplayer runs smoothly, but what makes a game memorable, are the feelings that are connected to it.

I have only positive memories of Halo 4 and that is why I love this game. Amen.
