Girls Love Halo Interview with Rebecca

Another Interview, another inspiring woman. Rebecca aka Bonks is a writer and narrative designer. She has worked on Mutant Football League and is the creator and writer of Shero and Vex, a free webcomic. As you may know from the latest article on here she also writes for SugarGamers and approached me for an Interview. She lives in Chicago with her husband and is an overall bad ass woman. Let’s hear her Halo story. Enjoy!

1. When did you start playing Halo?

Right at the start of the party with CE when it came out.

2. If you could choose to be one character of the Halo universe, who would you be?

First one that comes to mind is Veronica Dare. Her position in intelligence is often a thankless one, and it can make it hard for her to maintain friendships, I relate to that hahaha. She also gets to torture Buck and yet he still puts out, what a trooper. However, she’s earned her authority by making the unpopular decisions no one wants to make. She has to have a lot of faith and trust in herself, I definitely could afford a little more self confidence.

3. Do you have a favorite Halo quote?

One that sticks out comes from Jun, he’ll say it to you when you’re idol. „I kill the enemy, but do not hate them.“ It’s a damn fine quote for something that is essentially filler, also made me fall for him hard. Actually, my husband and I both love that quote. My husband is a retired marine who saw combat in Iraq and can relate to this quote on a very personal level. As a someone who has written for games, I really appreciate this line, there is clear evidence of research and dedication to the character’s persona.

4. What do you love most about Halo?

The universe is expansive and for the most part maintains good continuity. The game play is as addictive as the lore. Also, the female Spartans never suffered anything that included boob cups, crop top armor or panty lines. The armor for the women was always legit, right from the start. Halo also recognized the importance of women in the franchise early on.

Girls Love Halo Interview with Chrysann

Another year, another Halo Interview. This time I have asked a long time acquaintance from Instagram who goes by the name of Knightinwhite. She is a Halo/Skyrim photographer and car enthusiast. She met her husband through Halo while playing Reach. That alone is the best story. Let’s see what she has to say about Halo. Enjoy!

1.  When did you start playing Halo?

I started playing Halo later than most people, I got my first Xbox when I was 15, and started playing Halo CE, but I had no internet at the time and only played the campaign. Shortly after finishing CE, I got Halo 3 and Halo Reach.

2. If you could choose to be one character of the Halo universe, who would you be?

I would probably want to be Noble 6. Although he dies, he was a nameless hero, an underdog, he was the new guy, the guy no one thought would have so much meaning to his existence. When all was lost, he completed his mission, putting Noble team’s name on the board.

3. Do you have a favorite Halo quote?

„Wake me, when you need me…“ It’s such a classic, and also the username of the guy I fell in love with.

4. What do you love most about Halo?

Halo, for a very long time, was the only Xbox game I owned. I had little interest in other games for a while. What I love most about the game (Up until about Halo 5) was the in-depth story. The beautiful connection between Bungie and players. (and even the new connection with 343i during Halo 4) The Halo storyline was unmatched by any other game or even book. See you star side, Bungie.

Halo books_Fotu_December

As you can see in the picture above I have a lot of Halo books. I am still missing a few though, so just now I ordered the last missing Halo novels online: Envoy, Retribution, New Blood, Legacy of Onyx and Smoke and Shadow (pre-ordered).

And since I am an old school kinda gal, I am still missing the digital-only novels/short story Saints Testimony and Shadow of Intent. I will have to cave in and try to read them on a screen eventually.

After completing the Kilo-Five trilogy and loving it, I will now grab Troy Denning’s ‚Last Light‘, but only after I finished Tower Lord by Anthony Ryan. It’s part of a series which I really like. I am all about fantasy and sci-fi novels. When I was younger I only read serious books all the time. Sartre and Dostojewski and Kafka and all that good stuff. Franz Kafka is still my absolute favorite but when I got older I discovered the fantasy and sci-fi world and was hooked immediately.

Other than that, I am still very busy with being a mom and trying to game as much as I want to. I am playing Ghost Recon with two of my friends and it’s a blast. We are the worst in this game but I haven’t laughed so hard while playing since this game. Other than that I am playing Hellblade, Brothers and Uncharted.

Hellblade is incredible and I will write a review on that once I am finished. But it’s hard to find the time. This is a game I only want to play with a headset and at least 2 hours time for myself. As you can imagine this only happens once in a month. But I have no need to hurry this.

Brothers ‚A Tale Of Two Sons‘ is pretty cute but a little tricky due to the gameplay. I get confused with playing 2 characters with 1 controller. It is unique though that is for sure. And the whole design and atmosphere of the game are just magical.

And lastly, I finished Drake’s Fortune. My first Uncharted game ever. I know, I know! Again I am late to the party, but I am so excited for this series. It is such a glorious feeling to know that you have 4 more games to play when you loved the first. And since I am aware of the love for this series within the gaming community I know I am bound for some incredible adventures and gaming greatness.

To conclude this random post, I apologize for not being active enough on this blog. I hope this will change soon, as I have some plans on how I want this blog to change in the future. Let’s just say it’s going to be less Halo and more gaming and geek topics. At least until Halo 6 comes out.

Xbox FanFest at Gamescom 2017

Gamescom 2017 is nigh and I have been so lucky as to receive an invitation to the Xbox FanFest. Last year and the year before I attended the Fest as well and it was a pleasure. Like in 2015, it will be at the Gürzenich, a great venue here in Cologne. I remember when I first arrived there and walked in, I was pretty amazed. My baby daughter was only 5 months old and I was quite nervous being away for a couple of hours. Last year the Fest was held on the Gamescom venue itself. It was a little smaller but also very cool.

So this time we will be back at the Gürzenich and I am looking forward to a night out with fellow like minded people. The Fest will start on Tuesday 22th with the „Middle Earth: Shadow of War – Legendary War Party“ hosted by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. I have no clue how this will turn out and what to expect. It’s going to be a different location as well. On Wednesday 23th we will attend the FanFest FanCave at the Gürzenich. There we will have the chance to play upcoming games on the brand new Xbox One X. Woohoo! I will be posting stories on the Girls Love Halo Instagram account on both days so keep an eye out for that.

I played – Valiant Hearts

In 2014 Ubisoft Montpellier released a 2D adventure puzzle that takes place during World War 1. It’s name is Valiant Hearts – The Great War. It is an anti war game and it is truly and I mean truly amazing. I have played this game 2 years ago I think, but just recently I was thinking about it again and how much it moved me. And I thought that if I can bring just one person to play this game I have done good.

Fotu_ValiantHearts_cover

Right from the beginning I knew that Valiant Hearts was that kind of game. The kind that moves you, makes you tear up and leaves you thinking. And that stays with you. After all the other games you have played, you still think about it and feel a sense of melancholy.

So, in this game you play 5 characters: the frenchman Emile, his son in law, the german Karl, the american soldier Freddy, a Belgian nurse named Anna and Walt, a dog. It comprises of four chapters that again are split into sections. The game is about love and the horrors of war. About the strength you receive from love and friendship. It is about a family that is separated by the cruelty of war and pitted against each other.

In the beginning of the game, Karl is deported by the french and put in the german army. His french wife Marie and his son Victor are left behind. Maries father Emile and Karl’s father in law has to join the french army. The two of them are in opposing armies now but the goal of the game is to reunite Karl with his wife and kid. The characters have different skills like using a bone as a makeshift lever or a wire-cutter to get through obstacles. To progress in the game you have to solve puzzles and find your way through a terrifying war landscape with bombs going off nearby and shooting and screaming. I thought that the difficulty of the puzzles was just on point. Not to tough and not to easy.

And then the music! Oh the music!

Listen to it:

I don’t remember how long it took me to finish the game but it’s said to take between 6 to 8 hours for the story. The price is around 15 $.

What I find so appealing in this game is the fact that you play in a historic event but that it doesn’t feel like the boring history class we all had to endure. History comes to life here and as I said it is terrifying, but also beautiful.
