Xbox FanFest at Gamescom 2017

Gamescom 2017 is nigh and I have been so lucky as to receive an invitation to the Xbox FanFest. Last year and the year before I attended the Fest as well and it was a pleasure. Like in 2015, it will be at the Gürzenich, a great venue here in Cologne. I remember when I first arrived there and walked in, I was pretty amazed. My baby daughter was only 5 months old and I was quite nervous being away for a couple of hours. Last year the Fest was held on the Gamescom venue itself. It was a little smaller but also very cool.

So this time we will be back at the Gürzenich and I am looking forward to a night out with fellow like minded people. The Fest will start on Tuesday 22th with the „Middle Earth: Shadow of War – Legendary War Party“ hosted by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. I have no clue how this will turn out and what to expect. It’s going to be a different location as well. On Wednesday 23th we will attend the FanFest FanCave at the Gürzenich. There we will have the chance to play upcoming games on the brand new Xbox One X. Woohoo! I will be posting stories on the Girls Love Halo Instagram account on both days so keep an eye out for that.

Girls Love Halo Interview – Boys Edition with Thomas

The second Boys Edition is out. This time I asked Thomas aka Halo Scotland to answer my 10 questions. My description of Thomas? True Scotsman, you won’t understand him if you are in a party with him, makes funny noises when he is playing Halo, used to be a descend Sniper (hehehe), takes amazing Screenshots and has a special type of humor. Which I understand and like very much. We met on Instagram over four years ago. Along this Interview you will see some of Thomas favorite screenshots. Enjoy!

1.  When did you start playing Halo?

Be warned I’m awful at writing about myself, way better talking to someone but here goes. I first started playing Halo when CE first came out. Well kinda, I just held the controller while my dad played. I was only 4 years old at the time so the old motor controls weren’t up to scratch to play an fps. If I had to say when I really got into it I’d say it was half way through Halo 3’s release. Yes I missed out on Halo 2 when it came out, what of it? I was a Sony Pony at the time.

2. If you could choose to be one character of the Halo universe, who would you be?

I would have to say…. See the suicidal Marine in Halo: Reach. Yea. That guy.

3. Do you have a favorite Halo quote?

„Fate had us meet as foes, but this Ring will make us brothers.“ Because the quote itself just shows how far the Chief and Thel Vadam had to go in order to save not only themselves but the galaxy from the Halo rings planned detonation.

4. What do you love most about Halo?

Now most people would say that they love the story but in all honesty I just love the screenshot community and the creativity it has birthed into the games. I started in Halo 4 because of you Lena and now 5 years later I’m happy to say I haven’t improved at all.

5. What do you hate most about Halo?

MCC. NEXT QUESTION PLEASE!!!!

I played – Valiant Hearts

In 2014 Ubisoft Montpellier released a 2D adventure puzzle that takes place during World War 1. It’s name is Valiant Hearts – The Great War. It is an anti war game and it is truly and I mean truly amazing. I have played this game 2 years ago I think, but just recently I was thinking about it again and how much it moved me. And I thought that if I can bring just one person to play this game I have done good.

Right from the beginning I knew that Valiant Hearts was that kind of game. The kind that moves you, makes you tear up and leaves you thinking. And that stays with you. After all the other games you have played, you still think about it and feel a sense of melancholy.

So, in this game you play 5 characters: the frenchman Emile, his son in law, the german Karl, the american soldier Freddy, a Belgian nurse named Anna and Walt, a dog. It comprises of four chapters that again are split into sections. The game is about love and the horrors of war. About the strength you receive from love and friendship. It is about a family that is separated by the cruelty of war and pitted against each other.

In the beginning of the game, Karl is deported by the french and put in the german army. His french wife Marie and his son Victor are left behind. Maries father Emile and Karl’s father in law has to join the french army. The two of them are in opposing armies now but the goal of the game is to reunite Karl with his wife and kid. The characters have different skills like using a bone as a makeshift lever or a wire-cutter to get through obstacles. To progress in the game you have to solve puzzles and find your way through a terrifying war landscape with bombs going off nearby and shooting and screaming. I thought that the difficulty of the puzzles was just on point. Not to tough and not to easy.

And then the music! Oh the music!

Listen to it:

I don’t remember how long it took me to finish the game but it’s said to take between 6 to 8 hours for the story. The price is around 15 $.

What I find so appealing in this game is the fact that you play in a historic event but that it doesn’t feel like the boring history class we all had to endure. History comes to life here and as I said it is terrifying, but also beautiful.
